First impressions make a big difference.

Often referred to as “curb-appeal” the impression your house and its landscaping makes on visitors sets expectations for the rest of the home. Landscaping in the Lowcountry is especially challenging with its soil and moisture conditions, weather extremes, hurricanes and plant-devouring deer.

Fortunately, Ted Andrea, landscaping consultant and owner of Daniel island Nursery, has spent the past 16 years gaining expertise in dealing with these issues.

Noting that palm trees were more likely to survive a major storm than most other species, Andrae has become the local expert on the species. Recently he started working with a grower to introduce a hybrid palm that can resist the cold spells of the Lowcountry winters. Ted also has been schooled in irrigation and drainage, insecticides, fungicides and pruning.

The Daniel Island Nursery is Andrae’s fourth nursery in the area. Located on Clements Ferry Road just north of I-526, it is convenient to the fast-growing residential communities in the area.

When possible, Andrae likes to work on a project from its inception. “I have a gift for envisioning the final result after reviewing the building plan, the lot and the environs,” he remarked. He also points out that making the vision a reality involves a lot of expertise in grading, filling and water control, as well as knowledge of how to work with the dense clay soil around marshland. Ted characterizes his design approach as “Southern Tropical Lowcountry Style,” which uses oaks, palms, crape myrtle, sweet grass and other native fauna in a design that merges the home and the surroundings.
